A Rainbow of Curries from Around the World!

I have mentioned before that curried dishes are found all over the world.  Here is a selection of some of the more colourful, and occasionally unusually flavoured, curries, in no particular order:

1.Pink curry veggie wrap.  This features lettuce, tomato and cucumber but it gets its colouring from the key ingredient which is beetroot.

2.Thai yellow curry.  A popular mild but tasty dish made with nutmeg, ginger and coconut milk.

3.Black curry.  A Japanese speciality, it incorporates norikuro which is a black type of seaweed.  The dish is served with often served with a poached egg.

4.Orange halibut curry.  The halibut is chopped into cubes and cooked with onions, garlic, tomatoes, mustard, orange rind and anchovies to provide an extremely ‘fishy’ tasting curry.

Combat Bowel Cancer with Hot Curries!

The Journal of Clinical Investigation has published a study which suggests that a chemical compound found in spicy curries can help prevent the risk of developing bowel cancer.

Capsaicin is what gives chilli peppers their heat.  In an experiment it was given to mice by scientists.  It triggered a pain receptor in cells in the lining of the intestines which resulted in a reaction reducing the likelihood of developing colorectal tumours.  In fact it was found to extend the life of the subject mice by up to 30%.
